How to convert M4A to MP3
- Choose the MP3 bitrate – 128 kbps for voice recordings, 192 kbps for music – and, if needed, start and end times.
- Choose your M4A files or drop them on the page. The conversion starts right away.
- Listen to the MP3 in the player and download it, or all files together as a ZIP.
What is M4A?
M4A is an MPEG-4 file that contains only audio – usually compressed with AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), sometimes with Apple Lossless (ALAC). iPhone voice memos, music bought in iTunes, GarageBand exports and many recording apps use it. AAC is more efficient than MP3, but MP3 still plays on more devices, such as older car stereos, MP3 players and some programs.
- AAC in M4A converts in every current browser.
- Apple Lossless (ALAC) files may only be readable in Safari.
- Protected .m4p files (copy-protected music) cannot be converted.
Convert iPhone voice memos to MP3
- Open the Voice Memos app and tap the recording.
- Tap … (More), then Share, and choose Save to Files – or send it to your computer with AirDrop or email.
- Open this page, choose the saved
.m4afile and download the MP3.
For speech, 128 kbps and Mono keep files small without any audible loss.
Frequently asked questions
Is M4A better than MP3?
AAC in M4A usually sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, but MP3 is supported by more devices and programs. Convert when a device or service only accepts MP3.
Can I convert songs from Apple Music?
No. Streaming downloads and other copy-protected files cannot be converted. Your own recordings and music bought without copy protection work.
Why does my M4A file not convert?
It may use Apple Lossless, which some browsers cannot decode – try Safari – or it may be copy-protected.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The audio is converted in your browser, so your recordings stay on your device.
