PNG or JPG: which output is better?
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless – every pixel exactly as rendered | Lossy – slight changes, adjustable quality |
| Text, lines, charts | Perfectly sharp | Faint blur around edges |
| Photos and scans | Large files | Much smaller files |
| Best for | Slides, diagrams, documentation, further editing | Sharing, email, scanned pages, brochures |
For pages that are mostly photos or scans, PDF to JPG gives far smaller files.
Resolution and file size
The resolution decides how many pixels each page gets. An A4 page becomes about 1240 × 1754 pixels at 150 DPI and about 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 DPI – four times as many pixels, and a PNG file several times larger. 150 DPI is plenty for screens and presentations; choose 300 DPI only for printing or text recognition. Pages are rendered on a white background, as in a PDF viewer.
Frequently asked questions
Does PDF to PNG keep a transparent background?
No. Pages are rendered on white, the way PDF viewers show them.
Can I convert only certain pages?
Yes. Enter pages and ranges such as 1, 2-4 or 3, 7-9. Leave the field empty to convert every page.
Why are my PNG files so large?
PNG is lossless, so detailed pages and photos need many bytes. Choose a lower resolution, or convert to JPG for smaller files.
Is the conversion free and private?
Yes. It is free without limits, and the PDF is opened and rendered in your browser – nothing is uploaded.
