How to convert HEIC to PNG
- Choose your HEIC or HEIF photos, or drop them on the page.
- Optionally set a maximum width and height or a percentage – smaller images give much smaller PNG files.
- Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.
HEIC to PNG or HEIC to JPG?
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy, adjustable quality |
| Typical size of a 12-megapixel photo | 15–25 MB | 3–6 MB |
| Further editing | No additional loss when saved again | Every save adds a little loss |
| Best for | Editing, design, documentation | Sharing, email, websites, printing photos |
For everyday photos, JPG is usually the better choice; PNG pays off when you keep working on the images. The same photo as HEIC is typically only 1–3 MB.
How your HEIC photos are converted
- Safari decodes HEIC itself; other browsers use a built-in decoder that is downloaded once (about 1.5 MB).
- Photos are turned the right way up, as on the iPhone.
- Metadata such as the GPS location and camera details is not copied into the PNG.
- Only the main image is converted – the moving part of a Live Photo and depth information are left out.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the PNG files so large?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, which needs much more space for photos than HEIC or JPG. Reduce the size, or convert to JPG if you only want to share the photos.
Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; they are converted one after another and can be downloaded together as a ZIP.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. Photos have no transparency, so the PNG shows the whole picture as it is.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, and your photos never leave your device.
