AVIF to JPG Converter

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats on the web – but many programs, older devices and upload forms still cannot open it. Convert AVIF images to JPG right in your browser, one or many at once.

Photos are turned the right way up, and metadata such as the GPS location is not copied into the converted files.

Private: your data is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

    1. Choose your AVIF files or drop them on the page.
    2. Set the JPG quality and the background color for transparent areas if needed.
    3. Download the JPGs one by one, or all at once as a ZIP.

    What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) stores images with the compression of the AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media. AVIF files are often much smaller than JPGs of similar quality, and they support transparency, HDR and wide color. That is why many websites and image services deliver AVIF to modern browsers – and why images saved from the web sometimes turn out to be .avif files.

    Browser support

This converter uses your browser to read AVIF, which current browsers can all do:

    BrowserReads AVIF since
    ChromeVersion 85 (2020)
    FirefoxVersion 93 (2021)
SafariVersion 16 (2022) on macOS Ventura, iOS 16 and later
    EdgeVersion 121 (2024)

If your browser cannot read a file, the file list shows an error – update the browser or try another one.

    Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open AVIF files?

AVIF is still young, so older image viewers, editors, office programs and many upload forms do not support it. Converting to JPG makes the images usable everywhere.

Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce the quality?

At 90 % JPG quality the difference is practically invisible, but the JPG files are usually larger than the AVIF originals.

What happens to transparent AVIF images?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose – white by default. For transparency, convert to PNG with the image converter.

    Are my files uploaded?

No. The images are converted in your browser and stay on your device.
