How to convert MP4 to MP3
- Set the MP3 bitrate – 192 kbps is a good default – and, if you only need part of the audio, the start and end times in seconds.
- Choose your MP4 files or drop them on the page. The conversion starts right away and shows its progress.
- Listen to the result in the player, then download the MP3 – or all files together as a ZIP.
Which bitrate should you choose?
| Bitrate | Size per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | about 1 MB | Speech, podcasts, voice memos |
| 192 kbps | about 1.4 MB | Music – the recommended default |
| 256 kbps | about 1.9 MB | Music with a lot of detail |
| 320 kbps | about 2.4 MB | The highest quality MP3 offers |
The sound in an MP4 is usually already compressed (as AAC), so bitrates above 192–256 kbps rarely make an audible difference. For speech, Mono is perfectly sufficient.
How it works – and what to keep in mind
- Your browser decodes the audio track of the video; the MP3 is then encoded with LAME in the background, so the page stays responsive.
- The whole file is read into memory, so very long videos need a computer with enough RAM; files up to 1.5 GB are accepted.
- Some videos use sound formats your browser cannot decode, such as certain surround tracks – the file then shows an error. Another browser may succeed.
- Convert only videos that you made yourself or that you have the right to use.
Frequently asked questions
Is the MP4 to MP3 converter free?
Yes – no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
Can I convert only part of a video?
Yes. Enter the start and end in seconds, for example 30 and 95 for the part from 0:30 to 1:35. Leave the end empty to keep everything until the end of the file.
Why does my video not convert?
Either your browser cannot decode the sound of this video, or the file is too large for the available memory. Try a current version of Chrome or Firefox, or split very long recordings first.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The audio is extracted and converted on your device; your videos are never sent to a server.
