How to extract audio from a video
- Set the MP3 bitrate and, if you only need part of the sound, the start and end times in seconds.
- Choose your video files or drop them on the page – the audio is extracted right away.
- Check the result in the player and download the MP3, or all files together as a ZIP.
Supported video formats
Your browser decodes the sound of the video, so what works depends a little on the browser:
| Format | Typical sound | Works in |
|---|---|---|
| MP4, M4V | AAC | All current browsers |
| MOV (iPhone, cameras) | AAC | Safari, and usually Chrome and Edge |
| WebM | Opus or Vorbis | Chrome, Edge, Firefox |
| MKV | AAC, Opus, Vorbis | Usually Chrome and Edge |
| 3GP | AAC | Most browsers |
| AVI, WMV, FLV | – | Not supported by browsers |
Videos with Dolby Digital surround sound (AC-3 or E-AC-3) can usually be read only by Safari on Apple devices.
Tips for long recordings
- The whole video is read into memory, so long files need a computer with enough RAM; files up to 1.5 GB are accepted.
- Enter start and end times to extract only the part you need – that also saves memory and time.
- For speech, 128 kbps and Mono are plenty; for music, use 192 kbps or more.
- Convert only videos that you made yourself or that you have the right to use.
Frequently asked questions
Which video formats can I convert to MP3?
MP4 works in every current browser. MOV, WebM, MKV and 3GP work in most browsers, depending on the sound format. AVI, WMV and FLV cannot be read by browsers.
Does the video quality matter?
No. Only the sound is used; the picture is ignored, so the MP3 has the same audio quality whatever the video resolution.
Can I extract audio from a video on my phone?
Yes – open this page in your phone's browser and choose the video. Very long videos may need more memory than a phone has; trim them or use a computer.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The audio is extracted and converted on your device; nothing is sent to a server.
